...during a game of pirates.

(all in pirate voices, of course)

#1:  Tie him up!

#2:   (after tying) There you are!

#1:  No food or grog for ye!  But you can have a book!  #2, get him a book!

#2:  Should I get him a good book or a BAD book?

So you see,  one can have hard tack and grog withheld,  but even when in the throes of a pirate capture,  one just cannot do without a book.  Be it good or bad....
