Haiku and Exciting Things on the Road

We have had some fun lately...in a variety of ways.

First,  there was this discovery as we drove down the canyon yesterday:

"Is that a tarantula?" you say?  Why, yes...it is!  

I almost caused a traffic accident as I tried to get it.  Had to quickly empty out a container of baby puffs (see the remnants on the back legs....) and then emptied out a big container of blocks that we just happened to have in the trunk.  

Had to be done!

We then brought it to Papa's work (were hoping to surprise some students but, alas, were too late!).

It is huge and beautifully creepy.  

And in residence (in a closed habitat) in our shed until later this evening when we plan to do a release.

Major excitement!

We honored the beast during our Haiku lesson this morning.  

Here was my sample poem:

Tarantula

Driving the canyon,

Tarantula on the road!

Brown, black and hairy.

The kids then followed with some pretty awesome ones of their own:

The Shark by Ella

Twirling torpedo,

Propelling forward toward prey.

Hunter of the deep.

The Hawk by Asher

A big, black forest.

Hawk flies quiet in the night.

Death to a small mouse.

Halloween by Ethan

Halloween is soon.

A bat flies across the sky.

A pale ghost flies by.

We have been doing a lot of writing lately and having quite the time.  Good times, mostly!  

We have just published our first installment of the Holden's Home Press---a newspaper that we plan to publish once a month.  It's going "to press" today (aka:  the copy store) and will be sent out tomorrow.  Look for it in your mailboxes!

And Cate has been up to lots of antics:

And for some reason this toy I saw at the store the other day makes me laugh (hard!) each time I see it.  Really, really dumb.  And really, really (for some reason!) funny!
